The FBI has appointed Karl Robert Schumann as its new Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Assistant Director, placing a longtime bureau leader in charge of enterprise technology, cybersecurity, digital transformation, IT governance, and innovation across the bureau.

Schumann joined the FBI as a Special Agent in 2005 and has built a career spanning national security, counterintelligence, operational technology, and enterprise IT. Most recently, he served as Deputy Assistant Director in the Operational Technology Division, where he helped oversee technology supporting national security, criminal, and intelligence operations.
He previously served as Section Chief of the Enterprise Vetting Center and as Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the Norfolk Field Office, overseeing counterterrorism, counterintelligence, intelligence, and security programs.
Before joining the FBI, Schumann served for more than 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and Air Force Reserve, specializing in law enforcement, counterterrorism, and national security. He holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Rutgers University and a master’s degree in management from Troy University.
