The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on May 29 that Scott Flanders will officially assume the role of Chief Information Officer (CIO). Flanders has been serving as the NRC’s acting CIO and will now transition into the role permanently. He steps into this position following his tenure as the deputy CIO.
Flanders joined the NRC in 1991 as a reactor engineer intern and has since held various leadership roles. He has been a member of the Senior Executive Service since 2004 and has led several technical organizations within the NRC. Before his appointment as deputy CIO, he was the director of the Division of Site Safety and Environmental Analysis in the Office of New Reactors and the deputy director of the Division of Waste Management and Environmental Review in the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards.
In his new role as CIO, Flanders will oversee the NRC’s information technology functions, including cyber and information security, data management, artificial intelligence, and enterprise governance. His primary focus will be on enhancing information access and improving the overall performance of the agency.
With over three decades of service at the NRC, Flanders brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new role as CIO, where he will continue to support and advance the agency’s mission.
