With global uncertainty continuing during a period of accelerated digital transformation, CIOs and technology executives must guide their organizations with more agility and precision. At the 2025 Gartner IT Symposium/Xpo, analysts introduced their Top Strategic Technology Trends for 2026, as a framework for managing what it calls a pivotal year for both innovation and risk.
AI drives nearly every trend on the list, indicating a shift toward context-aware and autonomous systems that can scale and deliver measurable business value.
1. Supercomputing and Specialized Language Models
A major focus of Gartner’s outlook is AI Supercomputing Platforms, combinations of hardware and orchestration software built for data-heavy workloads in areas such as biotech, finance, and climate modeling.
Gartner expects that by 2028, more than 40% of enterprises will adopt hybrid computing approaches, up from 8% today.
Complementing this is the rise of Domain-Specific Language Models (DSLMs), designed for precision and compliance in enterprise AI.
Unlike general-purpose models, DSLMs are trained on curated data for specific industries or business functions. Gartner projects that by 2028, DSLMs will power more than half of enterprise generative AI deployments.
2. Multiagent Systems and AI-Native Development
Multiagent Systems (MAS) are emerging as distributed networks of AI agents that interact, collaborate, and make autonomous decisions. By using modular, reusable frameworks, they’re already driving scalable automation in areas like supply chain management and customer service.
AI-Native Development Platforms are also reshaping software creation.
Instead of large teams, Gartner predicts that by 2030, 80% of engineering groups will reorganize into smaller, AI-assisted teams. These “tiny teams” allow domain experts to participate directly in building applications, speeding up iteration and improving business alignment.
3. Preemptive Cyber and AI Governance
The expansion of AI introduces new security risks.
To address these risks, the report highlights AI Security Platforms as a vital defense strategy.
These centralized systems manage governance across in-house and third-party AI tools, offering protection against threats unique to AI environments such as prompt injection attacks, data leakage, and rogue agent behavior.
Gartner predicts that by 2028, over half of all enterprises are expected to rely on these platforms to safeguard their AI investments.
“This is a world where prediction is protection.”
Tori Paulman, VP Analyst at Gartner
Preemptive Cybersecurity is also taking hold as organizations move towards proactive AI-driven protection.
With predictive threat analysis, automated deception, and intelligent incident response, these systems are estimated to account for half of all cybersecurity spending by 2030.
4. Digital Provenance and Confidential Computing
With the prevalence of open-source code, AI-generated content, and third-party software, Digital Provenance tools are becoming a necessity. Technologies like software bills of materials (SBoMs) and attestation help confirm the origin and integrity of digital assets.
Gartner warns that skipping these measures could expose companies to financial and reputational risk.
Confidential Computing, which keeps sensitive workloads private even from infrastructure providers, is also gaining ground. Gartner expects that by 2029, over 75% of operations running on untrusted infrastructure will use confidential computing for protection.
5. Physical AI and Geopatriation
Lastly, Gartner points to physical AI and bringing machine intelligence into the physical world through smart machinery.
While many industries are already creating systems that can analyze and act independently, success depends on talent and change management as much as technology.
The concept of moving data and workloads from global public clouds to regional or sovereign alternatives, known as geopatriation, is also growing.
“Shifting workloads to providers with an increased sovereignty posture can help CIOs gain more control over data residency, compliance and governance,”
Gene Alvarez, Distinguished VP Analyst at Gartner
Gartner predicts that by 2030, more than 75% of enterprises in Europe and the Middle East will adopt localized solutions to address regulatory and data sovereignty needs.
Action Required
The technology landscape for 2026 is being reshaped.
Gartner’s latest trends point to a future where AI is a core capability and trust and security will define the winners.
For CIOs, this is the moment to design what comes next. Organizational success relies on turning passive adaptation into active transformation.
- AI must be domain-specific, secure, and integrated into everyday workflows.
- Software development must move faster and become more collaborative, with AI as a partner.
- Cybersecurity must move to a predictive stance.
- Infrastructure should be built with core values of sovereignty, resilience, and trust.
Now’s the time to start building the future.
