Spotify (NYSE:SPOT) reported Q2 2026 revenue of €4.8 billion (approximately $5.5 billion USD), up 15% year over year on a constant currency basis. The company surpassed 300 million Premium subscribers for the first time, finished the quarter with 777 million monthly active users, and posted a record gross margin of 33.4%.
Operating income reached €655 million (about $756 million USD), while free cash flow totaled €797 million (about $920 million USD).
Management credited continued product innovation with helping drive engagement and subscriber growth, spending much of the earnings call discussing the technology supporting that progress. Executives described how proprietary AI is changing software development and recommendation systems while introducing new experiences across the platform.
Those investments are also shaping the company’s next phase of monetization. New AI-powered Premium features and advertising tools are intended to expand revenue while giving Spotify greater control over the cost of delivering AI.
Why It Matters: Spotify presented AI as an operating capability integrated throughout the business. Internal developer tools work alongside proprietary recommendation models, while advertising technology supports new subscription offerings. Company leaders also emphasized that AI spending will remain closely tied to measurable business results.
- AI Development Tools Improve Engineering Efficiency: Spotify’s internal AI platform is becoming part of everyday software development. Engineers use an internal assistant called Honk to request bug fixes or product updates through Slack and receive a testable build before reaching the office. Supporting that workflow is Chirp, an internal platform that routes work across commercial and self-hosted open-source models while preserving development context across teams. Söderström said the platform ensures, “We don’t pay for the same reasoning twice, and we don’t lose our own data.” The system also gives engineers visibility into inference spending at the individual developer level.
- Proprietary AI Model Improves Personalization: Spotify’s investment in proprietary AI is beginning to produce measurable product gains. The company’s large taste model learns from approximately 3.4 trillion user events each day and now powers new recommendation experiences across the platform. Management reported improvements in active days, autoplay listening, track saves, and lower autoplay drop-off after deploying the new recommendation system. Those same models are also improving conversational experiences, producing double-digit growth in listening minutes while encouraging users to save more content to their libraries.
- AI Features Support Premium Growth: Generative AI is becoming part of Spotify’s subscription strategy. Prompted Playlist, which allows users to create playlists with natural language, has already been adopted by roughly 14 million of its first 100 million eligible users. The company plans to extend the feature to audiobooks while continuing to develop products such as Talk to Spotify and Running Mode. Spotify also reported that Audiobooks+ has surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue, providing another source of subscription revenue through premium features.
- Advertising Platform Expands Automation: Spotify completed the migration of its inventory to an in-house ad server during the quarter, allowing more demand to flow through automated buying channels. Those channels now account for nearly 40% of ad-supported revenue, compared with just over 30% in the previous quarter, while active advertisers increased 60% year over year. The company also introduced integrations with Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini that allow advertisers to generate campaigns and audio assets with AI.
- AI Remix Platform Adds Independent Labels: Spotify announced an agreement with Merlin that expands participation in its upcoming AI remix platform to artists across more than 30,000 independent labels. Management said the service is built around artist permission, attribution, and compensation before AI-generated remixes become available. Spotify expects to begin with a research preview so user feedback can improve the models before a wider release.
