On February 24, 1955, Steve Jobs, a visionary who would go on to reshape the digital landscape and redefine consumer technology, was born in San Francisco.
As co-founder of Apple, Jobs played a major role in shaping how people use computers, phones, and digital media. Seventy-one years after his birth, we commend the life and legacy of a man whose obsession with design and innovation changed the entire world.
Garage to Global Empire
Steve Jobs co-founded Apple Computer in 1976 alongside Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Working out of a Los Altos garage, Jobs helped usher in the personal computer revolution with the launch of the Apple I and later the Apple II.
But it was the 1984 release of the Macintosh that truly put Jobs’ design philosophy in motion by featuring intuitive interfaces paired with powerful computing to create a user-friendly package.
Despite his early success, Jobs’ relentless drive led to internal clashes, and he left Apple in 1985.
Not one to be sidelined, he founded NeXT Inc., a company focused on high-end workstations. While NeXT didn’t revolutionize the market the way Apple did, its software foundations would eventually power macOS, laying the groundwork for Apple’s next chapter.
Return to Apple and Product Milestones
In 1997, Apple bought NeXT, and Jobs returned to the company. Apple soon introduced new products that stood apart in both design and function.
The iMac offered a fresh look for home computers. The iPod and iTunes made digital music easier to buy and play. Later came the iPhone and iPad, which set new standards for mobile devices.
These products led to changes in how people access entertainment, communicate, and use the internet.
Apple’s rise during this time brought it from a struggling company to the most valuable public company in the world by 2011.
The Wrap
While Jobs passed in 2011, his approach and focus on the user experience remain part of Apple’s core identity. His ideas continue to shape the work of designers and entrepreneurs worldwide.
Today, we remember a person whose work still influences daily life.
Steve Jobs had a clear vision and followed it with intensity. The tools he helped build continue to connect people and open new paths for creativity.
