NYC mayor, in turnaround, will consider remote work for city employees

A labor shortage has depleted the public sector workforce.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has changed course on his position around remote work amidst a labor shortage. With this softening of stance on remote work, hybrid approaches for new employees are not out of the question.

Why it matters: NYC is facing a shortage of municipal workers, and the public sector has a shortage of workers across the board compared to the private sector which has mostly recovered.

  • The private sector has poached a great number of workers from NYC with incentives such as workplace flexibility and higher salaries.
  • Government roles are typically constrained by union contracts – leaving no room for incentives like sign-on bonuses.
