The National Science Foundation (NSF) has appointed Dorothy Aronson as its new Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer (CAIO). Aronson takes on this role while also currently serving NSF as Chief Data Officer (CDO).
This appointment follows the Biden Administration’s executive order and The Office of Management and Budget’s draft AI guidance for Federal agencies to designate someone to oversee AI as it continues to emerge. It outlines responsibilities such as advising on AI resourcing and workforce skills, coordinating AI activities, and managing AI risks
“In this pivotal role, she will be responsible for spearheading strategic initiatives, overseeing AI implementations, and driving innovation to meet the agency’s objectives in alignment with the executive order,” said an NSF spokesperson. “Her extensive expertise will undoubtedly contribute to advancing the agency’s capabilities in the realm of artificial intelligence.”
Aronson’s appointment to the CAIO role coincides with the NSF’s restructuring of technology roles, including establishing the Office of Business Information Technology Services. In addition to this new role, NSF is currently also restructuring the role of the Chief Information Officer.
