Amazon has announced plans to lay off an additional 9,000 workers, according to a memo sent out by CEO Andy Jassy to staff. The layoffs, which amount to just under 3% of its corporate workforce, will occur mainly in Amazon Web Services (AWS), People Experience and Technology (PCX), Advertising, and Twitch.
Why it matters: 9,000 jobs, although a small portion of the company’s workforce, are still a lot of jobs (and livelihoods) lost. To add fuel to the fire, Amazon already laid off 18,000 positions earlier this year to cut costs and recalibrate.
- Twitch CEO Dan Clancy confirmed that the Amazon-owned live-streaming platform was letting go of around 400 employees In a separate memo on Monday.
- Macroeconomic uncertainty has led to an increase in job cuts in the technology industry in recent months and Amazon, which quickly grew its headcount during the pandemic, is steadily decreasing its workforce to prepare for hard times ahead.
- The layoffs will take effect in the next few weeks.
