Asking for a Friend: What Are Some Strategies for Building a Strong Professional Network?

As a busy professional, finding time to network can be tough, but it's crucial for long-term success.

Dear Mike:

I am a relatively new leader and was just promoted to lead a new team. While I have the confidence to know that I will be successful in this role, at times, I feel overwhelmed and frankly a little over my head.

My issue is that I have always had a work-hard mentality and unfortunately have not had an opportunity to build a strong professional network which I know would be very beneficial in my new role and for my long-term career.

With that in mind, what suggestions would you have for me in building my network?

Thanks,

Pig-Pen

Hi Pig-Pen,

First of all congratulations on the new promotion. My palms are actually sweating a bit as I, too, remember the first time in my career when I was asked to lead a team. It can definitely be both an exciting and daunting time. I am sure that you will do well.

The fact is you are already ahead of the game in asking this question and recognizing the need to lean into a supportive network of peers or advisors. As a busy professional, finding time to network can be tough, but it’s still really important.

Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind.

  • Make a list of who you know and whose opinions or expertise you value and begin reaching out periodically. Busy professionals value their time, so when reaching out, be clear and concise in your communication, and respect their availability and schedule.
  • Set aside time each month to attend industry events or schedule virtual coffee meetings with colleagues, mentors, or other professionals in your field. Remember that authenticity is key to building strong professional relationships. Be yourself and show a genuine interest in getting to know others.
  • Professional communities like the CIO Professional Network or social platforms like LinkedIn can be powerful tools for building and maintaining professional relationships. Connect with others in your industry, share thought leadership content, and engage with others’ posts and updates.
  • Offer to mentor junior colleagues, volunteer for industry associations or non-profit organizations, or speak at industry events. Giving back is a great way to build your reputation and expand your network.
  • Show your appreciation for others’ time and expertise by thanking them and acknowledging their contributions. After meeting someone new, follow up with a thank-you email or message, and find ways to stay in touch. Share articles or news that might be of interest to them, and make sure to check in periodically.

Building strong relationships with colleagues, mentors, and other professionals in your industry can open up doors for your career, teach you new skills, and provide you with valuable insights into the latest industry trends. It’s not always easy to fit networking into your schedule, but the benefits can be huge. Plus, it’s a great way to stay up-to-date with the latest news and best practices in your field.

So, even though it may be challenging, I’d say that networking is definitely worth the effort, and I can offer that it has benefited me greatly in my leadership journey.

Wishing you continued success!

Mike
