Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) reported second-quarter revenue of $50.2 billion, up 22% year over year, while net income increased 36% to $22.3 billion. Diluted earnings per share climbed 38% to $8.91 as advertising continued to drive growth across the company’s family of apps.

Strong financial performance also gave Meta room to continue increasing capital expenditures, with leadership raising its outlook as the company invests heavily in AI infrastructure and next-generation computing resources.

Artificial intelligence remained the dominant theme throughout the earnings call. Executives discussed the expansion of Meta AI, continued investment in the Llama family of open models, growing adoption of AI-powered business messaging, and the construction of new data center capacity to support future AI workloads.

The conversation centered on building the computing infrastructure and software ecosystem needed to integrate AI across Meta’s products while creating new tools for businesses and developers.

Why It Matters: Meta is making AI a larger part of its business by expanding the infrastructure that powers its models and introducing new tools for businesses. The company’s latest investments show that future product development will depend as much on computing capacity as the AI models themselves.

  • Expanding AI Infrastructure: Meta continues expanding the computing foundation behind its AI ambitions. Executives discussed additional investment in data centers and the hardware required to train and run large AI models. Leadership said these projects are necessary to support future AI capabilities across the company’s products, making infrastructure one of Meta’s largest investment priorities.
  • Growing AI Business Agents: Business messaging is becoming a larger part of Meta’s AI strategy. Leadership described new opportunities to help companies automate customer conversations through AI assistants integrated into WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said, “I think every business is going to have an AI business agent.” He described AI agents as tools that can help businesses engage customers more efficiently through Meta’s platforms.
  • Advancing Open-Source AI: Meta continues investing in the Llama family of open-source AI models. Executives said wider developer adoption remains important because it gives organizations the ability to build applications using Meta’s technology. Leadership also said open access supports continued development of the Llama ecosystem while giving businesses more flexibility when creating AI solutions.
  • Enhancing Advertising With AI: Artificial intelligence continues improving the products that generate most of Meta’s revenue. Executives described how recommendation systems and generative AI help advertisers reach customers more effectively while improving campaign performance. Leadership also said these technologies contribute to financial results while supporting continued product development.
  • Building the Next Computing Platform: Meta described AI as technology that will support future computing experiences across many of its products. Executives discussed Meta AI alongside wearable devices as examples of where the company’s investments are headed. Zuckerberg said, “AI is improving every part of our business,” describing how the technology already influences product development and company operations.
