Meta Freezes AI Hiring Following Strategic Reorganization Of Its Division

A cold stop.

Meta’s aggressive AI drive has shifted gears, with major internal shake-ups and a sudden hiring freeze.

As part of the newly configured Meta Superintelligence Labs, the artificial intelligence division has been split into four specialized teams addressing research, infrastructure, product initiatives, and long-horizon model development.

This restructuring follows several months of quick expansion and high-profile hires, including the $14.3 billion acquisition of a stake in Scale AI and the appointment of its founder, Alexandr Wang, as Meta’s chief AI officer.

Alongside these changes, the company has paused hiring across the entire AI division.

Meta has also restricted internal job changes within the group, while planning decisions for possible downsizing or role realignment remain under consideration.

The official explanation is that the company is taking time to stabilize its structure after a period of fast growth. However, the pause comes amid leadership turnover and performance setbacks.

Why It Matters: Meta’s restructuring shows how extensive AI investment can lead to structural adjustments once initial momentum stabilizes. The decisions being made now will likely shape Meta’s ability to compete in the next phase of artificial intelligence development, while also influencing industry norms around hiring and long-term priorities.

  • Four New Teams Within Meta Superintelligence Labs: Meta has reorganized its AI efforts into four parts: one focused on foundational research, one on infrastructure such as data centers, one on product integration, and one dedicated to long-term work on superintelligence. The goal is to give each area clearer responsibilities and reduce overlap between teams.
  • Hiring and Internal Transfers on Hold: After months of offering high salaries and aggressive recruitment from other companies, Meta has paused all external hiring in its AI group. Internal moves are also blocked without approval from Wang. This decision follows an intense growth period and is intended to give leadership time to assess how recent hires fit into the revised structure.
  • Abandonment of Prior Model and Shift to Closed Development: The team working on Meta’s next advanced AI model has chosen not to continue with its previous system, known internally as Behemoth. The new direction may include keeping the next model closed to outside developers, a departure from the company’s previous support for open-source tools.
  • Tensions Between New and Longtime Employees: The recent hires and leadership changes have led to conflict within the AI division. Some researchers have left the company, while others have been reassigned or questioned about past projects. The introduction of new managers has reshaped reporting lines and changed the focus of ongoing research.
  • Spending Continues Despite Hiring Pause: Although Meta has paused hiring, the company is still planning significant spending this year. Capital expenditures are expected to reach as much as $72 billion, much of it directed at AI infrastructure and development. Analysts say the pause reflects a need for planning and organization, not a full retreat from AI investment.
