Several major AI services went down Thursday morning, disrupting ChatGPT, Claude and Grok while users also reported problems with Google Gemini. For ChatGPT, it marked the second outage this week after a separate disruption on Monday.
OpenAI reported elevated errors across ChatGPT and Codex beginning around 10:58 a.m. ET. Anthropic had already reported problems across several Claude models, and xAI later confirmed issues with Grok.
By midday, conditions had started to improve. OpenAI deployed fixes across affected services, Anthropic reported that some Claude models had recovered, and user reports declined across several platforms.
Why It Matters: ChatGPT, Claude and Grok all experiencing problems during the same morning, alongside reported issues with Gemini, left companies with fewer AI options to fall back on. For organizations using these platforms across development, research and everyday business work, the outage shows where a multi-provider approach can still run into continuity problems when several services become unavailable at once.
- ChatGPT and Codex Affected: OpenAI said the incident affected 15 ChatGPT components and four Codex components. Conversations, login, search, file uploads, Voice mode, GPTs, image generation, Deep Research, Agent, ChatGPT Work, Atlas, Sites and connectors were among the affected services.
- Claude Reported Errors Earlier: Anthropic began reporting elevated errors around 9:41 a.m. ET across Mythos 5.1, Fable 5.1, Mythos 5, Fable 5 and several Opus models. The company identified the cause and worked on a fix, with some models later returning to baseline error rates.
- Grok and Gemini Saw Problems: xAI confirmed issues with Grok and said it was working on a fix. Gemini also drew hundreds of reports on Downdetector, though Google had not issued an outage notice.
- Reports Declined by Midday: Downdetector recorded more than 37,000 ChatGPT reports around 11 a.m. ET before the number fell below 1,500 by noon. Claude and Grok reports also declined during that period.
- Cause Remains Unconfirmed: Microsoft Azure experienced problems during the same window, leading to questions about a possible connection between the incidents. No shared cause has been confirmed. The ChatGPT outage also occurred ahead of OpenAI’s expected Astra release, though OpenAI has not connected the two events.
