Ivan Sutherland is an accomplished American electrical engineer and computer scientist. He won the 1988 A.M. Turing Award, the highest honor in computer science, for his groundbreaking contributions to computer graphics, notably his work on Sketchpad. He's often referred to as the father of computer graphics. Sutherland earned degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, Caltech, and MIT. His doctoral dissertation, supervised by Claude Shannon, paved the way for computer graphics, graphical user interfaces (GUI), and computer-aided design (CAD) programs.

After his academic journey, Sutherland served in the U.S. Army and worked on projects related to time-sharing systems and artificial intelligence. He held professorships at Harvard, the University of Utah, and Caltech. Sutherland co-founded companies that made significant strides in computer graphics technology. Throughout his career, Sutherland received numerous awards and honors, including the Turing Award, the U.S. National Academy of Engineering Zworykin Award, Smithsonian Computer World Award, and the Kyoto Prize. He was also elected to the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.
