He's often referred to as the father of computer graphics. Sutherland earned degrees from Carnegie Mellon University, Caltech, and MIT. His doctoral dissertation, supervised by Claude Shannon, paved the way for computer graphics, graphical user interfaces (GUI), and computer-aided design (CAD) programs.

After his academic journey, Sutherland served in the U.S. Army and worked on projects related to time-sharing systems and artificial intelligence.
