Dawn Zimmer was appointed Chief Information Officer at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) following nearly a year as Acting CIO and Principal Deputy CIO.
In her role, Zimmer leads DOE’s enterprise-wide information technology and cybersecurity initiatives, with a focus on secure, efficient, and innovative systems that align with the Department’s national mission in energy security and scientific advancement.
Zimmer brings over 25 years of cross-sector leadership experience spanning federal government, academia, and the private sector. Prior to DOE, she was Executive Director of IT Engagement & Experience at Virginia Tech, overseeing university-wide initiatives focused on enhancing digital services and user experience.
Her federal experience spans senior roles at the FAA and Department of Justice, with a focus on IT modernization, improving cybersecurity posture, and developing user-driven technology solutions.
Renowned for her strategic vision and collaborative leadership, Zimmer is expected to be a key force in shaping DOE’s technological future.
