Air Force Appoints New Head of Technology

The experienced veteran is taking flight in an exciting role.

The Department of the Air Force announced Venice M. Goodwine, a member of the Senior Executive Service, as Chief Information Officer (CIO). She will lead three directorates: Enterprise Information Technology, Data and Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity. Goodwine will manage an overall portfolio valued at around $17 billion and support 20,000 cyber operations personnel. She will also lead career management initiatives for 10,000 IT/Cyber civilian personnel around the world. In addition, she will provide direction for the department’s Information Technology investment strategy. This includes Enterprise policies, data management, digital transformation, information resources management, information technology innovation initiatives, information assurance, and related matters for the Department of the Air Force.

Goodwine has amassed more than 30 years of technology leadership experience. She held significant positions at the USDA, Marine Corps Systems Command, Central Texas College, and Stennis Space Center, among others. Before becoming CIO, she served as the Director of Enterprise Information Technology in the Office of the Chief Information Officer for the Department of the Air Force. Her extensive career includes leading large IT organizations, shaping agency-wide strategy and policy, supervising cybersecurity operations, setting up governance, managing IT acquisition, and overseeing program execution.

According to her biography, Goodwine also had an extensive military career. She commenced her active duty with the Air Force in 1986, specializing as a Signals Intelligence Analyst. Later, she transitioned to the Air Force Reserve, earning her commission in 2003 as a Communication and Information Officer. Over the course of her career, she undertook assignments at multiple levels, including squadron, group, wing, joint, and combined. Her distinguished military service culminated in her retirement from uniformed duty in 2022.

Goodwine earned her Bachelor of Computer and Information Systems from the University of Maryland and her Master of Business Administration from William Carey College. She has also remained very active in continued education having completed a Chief Information Officer Executive Program from the University of Maryland. She has completed a great number of military-specific courses as well.
