Is ChatGPT’s Energy Impact Overestimated?

This figure, often cited to underscore the environmental implications of AI technologies, has been a focal point in debates about sustainable AI development.

However, recent analysis may challenge this prevailing notion.

By incorporating updated data and refined assumptions, a study from Epoch AI estimates that a typical ChatGPT query using the GPT-4o model consumes about 0.3 Wh – significantly lower than earlier projections. This reduction is attributed to advancements in model efficiency and hardware improvements since early 2023.

Why It Matters: Understanding the true energy consumption of AI models is crucial for assessing their environmental impact and guiding sustainable development practices. Overestimations can lead to unnecessary alarm, while underestimations might result in complacency. Accurate assessments ensure that stakeholders can make informed decisions about AI deployment and its ecological footprint.
