The 2023 Gallup State of the Global Workplace report offers interesting insights into the dynamics of employee engagement worldwide in 2022. A key point offered was that there was a significant global upsurge in engagement levels reaching a point not seen in several years.

Despite this promising development in employee engagement, the report presents a continued challenge: global worker stress. According to respondents, employee stress level remained at an unprecedented high, even as the impact of other negative emotions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have waned.

The coexistence of high employee engagement and elevated employee stress may seem contradictory at first glance. However, it is important to understand that these two factors can exist simultaneously due to various dynamics within the workplace and external factors affecting employees’ lives.

In light of the findings from Gallup’s survey on employee engagement and stress levels, leaders have a vital role to play. Here are some key actions leaders can take:

  1. Foster a positive work environment: Leaders should create a culture that values employee contributions, promotes open communication, and encourages collaboration. By fostering a supportive atmosphere, leaders can enhance employee engagement and satisfaction.
  2. Provide growth opportunities: Leaders should offer opportunities for learning, development, and career advancement. When employees see a clear path for growth within the organization, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work.
  3. Recognize and reward achievements: Leaders should acknowledge and appreciate employees’ efforts and achievements. Regular recognition and rewards for a job well done help foster a sense of value and motivation among employees.
  4. Support employee downtime: Recognize the importance of rest and relaxation. Encourage employees to take breaks and utilize vacation time. By promoting a balance, leaders can help employees maintain their energy levels, reduce burnout, and enhance overall engagement and satisfaction.
  5. Encourage employee feedback: Leaders should actively seek feedback from employees and create mechanisms for open dialogue. By valuing employee input and addressing their concerns, leaders demonstrate a commitment to employee engagement and improvement.
  6. Develop effective communication channels: Leaders should establish clear and transparent communication channels to ensure that employees are well-informed about organizational goals, changes, and decisions. Regular communication helps build trust and keeps employees engaged and aligned with the organization’s vision.
  7. Invest in training and development: Leaders should invest in training programs and resources to enhance employee skills and competencies. Providing opportunities for professional growth and upskilling not only boosts engagement but also equips employees to contribute more effectively to the organization.
