U.S., U.K. team up to sanction 7 members of Trickbot ransomware gang

The hacker group has targeted hospitals and other critical infrastructure.

US and British authorities announced sanctions against seven men part of the Russian-based Trickbot gang. The hacker group has targeted hospitals and other critical infrastructure.

Why it matters: While the sanctions are unlikely to discourage other criminals from participating in the attacks, it is a sign that international cooperation against ransomware criminals is growing.

  • This is the first time that British authorities have imposed sanctions on ransomware groups.
  • The sanctions come just two weeks after Germany played a role in helping the Justice Department shut down Hive, which also targeted hospitals and schools.
