Attempts to restore files in the Notice to Air Missions (NOTAM) database resulted in the January outage. The FAA has revoked access to the pilot messaging database by contractor personnel who unintentionally deleted files in the NOTAM database. Delayed synchronization to the backup database changes to maintenance protocols has also been implemented.
Why it matters: The NOTAM System provides critical safety information to pilots, flight crew, and other users in U.S. airspace. NOTAM is currently undergoing modernization to improve the delivery of safety-critical information to aviators. NOTAM Messages can include information about missing lights on a runway or tower or if an air show is near the flight path.
- Two Individuals, including a federal manager, are now required to be present during NOTAM System Maintenance.
- NOTAM Modernization began in 2019 and will continue through 2025 as the 30 yr legacy program is retired.
