The U.S. Space Force has temporarily halted the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT due to concerns over data security, according to a memo dated Sept. 29. The memo prohibits the use of AI tools, including large-language models, on government computers until formal approval is granted by the Chief Technology and Innovation Office. The pause is attributed to ‘data aggregation risks.’ Generative AI technology is seen as a potential revolution for the Space Force, enhancing operational speed.

The Air Force spokesperson confirmed the temporary ban and emphasized it is to safeguard service and Guardian data. The Space Force has formed a generative AI task force to assess responsible and strategic usage of the technology, with additional guidance expected in the coming month.”

Why it matters: The temporary suspension of generative AI tool usage by the U.S. Space Force brings into focus the escalating worries regarding data security linked to these technologies. This cautious approach, awaiting formal approval before utilizing AI tools, emphasizes the importance of responsible and secure integration of AI within government agencies. It’s a response to the profound potential generative AI holds to revolutionize operations in the Space Force and the military at large. It underscores the critical need to prioritize security and ensure the responsible deployment of advancing AI capabilities.

  • Both the private and public sectors adopted generative AI tools early on, but many are taking a moment to reassess security risks before continuing to use them, including the Space Force. Guardians, the name Space Force calls its workforce, are prohibited from utilizing AI tools on government computers until they receive formal approval.
  • “A strategic pause on the use of Generative AI and Large Language Models within the U.S. Space Force has been implemented as we determine the best path forward to integrate these capabilities into Guardians’ roles and the USSF mission,” Air Force spokesperson Tanya Downsworth said in a statement.
  • The Space Force has created a Generative AI task force with other Pentagon offices to ensure AI tools are used both strategically and responsibly.
