Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has revealed that artificial intelligence now accounts for a staggering 30% to 50% of the company’s daily workload. The shift marks a dramatic pivot toward automation and digital labor, reshaping how one of the world’s most influential enterprise software companies operates.

Benioff emphasized that the use of AI is enabling Salesforce employees to redirect their efforts to higher-value work, freeing them from repetitive tasks.

This AI-driven transformation is most visible in Salesforce’s use of its own AI platform, Agentforce, which the company describes as a new class of digital employees. These AI agents are automating engineering workflows, coding tasks, customer service, analytics, and marketing functions, with over 5,000 clients already onboard.

Benioff envisions that the total number of active digital agents will reach one billion by year’s end.

As Salesforce races to lead this new era of AI-powered enterprise, it is also facing broader questions about accuracy, ethics, and employment shifts driven by automation.

Why It Matters: Salesforce’s embrace of AI marks a turning point in the enterprise software realm. As digital labor increasingly supplements, and in some cases replaces, human effort, the balance of productivity, cost-efficiency, and employment is being recalibrated. Benioff’s candid reflections offer insight into how companies may navigate the dual challenge of innovation and workforce restructuring in the AI era.

  • Massive AI Adoption: AI now accounts for between 30% and 50% of Salesforce’s workload, according to Benioff. Areas like software engineering, coding, customer support, and even branding are increasingly handled by intelligent digital systems. Benioff calls this the beginning of a $3 to $12 trillion “digital labor revolution.”
  • Agentforce and Digital Employees: Salesforce’s AI platform, Agentforce, serves as the backbone of this transformation. It supports autonomous AI agents that integrate into business workflows, managing tasks with little to no human intervention. Salesforce reports that its AI tools are achieving approximately 93% accuracy in tasks like customer interaction, far outpacing competitors who lack Salesforce’s rich data ecosystem. Benioff notes that while AI will never be 100% accurate, its current performance is “pretty good.”
  • Layoffs and Restructuring: The push toward AI has not come without costs. Salesforce laid off over 1,000 employees in early 2025 as part of a company-wide restructuring designed to focus on AI development. This trend mirrors broader industry shifts, where automation leads to workforce downsizing.
  • Long-Term Vision: Benioff believes this is just the beginning of AI’s impact on work. The Salesforce CEO predicts a future where intelligent agents and robots manage a wide array of jobs, from virtual assistants to data analysts, fundamentally altering the structure of the modern workforce and requiring society to reconsider how labor, compensation, and value are defined.
