MoneyGram has confirmed that customer information was stolen during the cyberattack it suffered in September. The attack, which led to a global service outage, left millions unable to transfer funds and sparked widespread frustration before services were fully restored by the end of the month.

The compromised personal information included Social Security numbers, bank account details, and government-issued IDs. In some instances, more sensitive data—such as utility bills, transaction records, and additional bank account information—was also exposed.

For a small number of customers, the breach extended to criminal investigation data, particularly related to fraud cases, heightening concerns over the severity of the incident.

Although MoneyGram has not disclosed the total number of affected customers, the company is working with cybersecurity experts such as Crowdstrike and law enforcement to investigate the breach. Early reports suggest that the attackers may have accessed the system through a social engineering attack.

Why It Matters: The exposure of sensitive personal information in MoneyGram’s breach, including Social Security numbers, government IDs, and even criminal investigation data, poses serious risks of identity theft and fraud. This development heightens concerns about the long-term impact on affected customers, who may face financial and privacy threats. Beyond the initial service outage caused by the cyberattack, the revelation of compromised data undermines trust in MoneyGram’s security measures, potentially damaging its reputation and future customer confidence.

  • Scope of Stolen Data: The breached information includes names, Social Security numbers, utility bills, and transaction details. For a limited group, sensitive criminal investigation data related to fraud was also exposed.
  • Global Outage: The cyberattack led to a significant service outage from September 20-26, affecting millions of customers, particularly in developing nations. Several governments apologized for the delays caused by the disruption.
  • Investigation and Response: MoneyGram hired CrowdStrike to investigate the breach and denied any evidence of ransomware. The company believes the breach was the result of a social engineering attack targeting its IT help desk.
  • Consumer Protection: MoneyGram is offering two years of identity protection and credit monitoring for some impacted customers, urging them to remain vigilant for potential scams. Authorities like the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office have been notified, and further inquiries are ongoing to assess the breach’s full impact.
