Microsoft 365 Outage Disrupts Enterprise Services Across North America

Microsoft is working to restore Microsoft 365 after a widespread outage disrupted Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and several other services, primarily affecting users in North America. The incident began around 10:44 AM ET on July 23, prompting Microsoft to open incident MO1437424 as engineers investigated the disruption and worked to restore service.

The outage affected several Microsoft 365 applications used for collaboration, file storage, automation, AI, and administration.

At the time of the latest update, Microsoft said recovery efforts were ongoing and had not announced when all services would be fully restored.

Why It Matters: Microsoft’s initial mitigation restored service for only some customers, leading the company to test additional fixes while recommending that organizations review their business continuity and disaster recovery plans.

• Multiple Services Affected: The outage extended across SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Microsoft Teams, Power Automate, Copilot Chat, Microsoft Loop, and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Microsoft reported intermittent OneDrive access, SharePoint errors, degraded Teams chat, unavailable automation flows, Copilot delays, inaccessible Loop pages, and slow or unavailable Admin Center access.

• SharePoint Leads Reports: Downdetector recorded 2,403 reports at 11:11 AM ET, compared with a normal baseline of 29. SharePoint accounted for 78% of complaints, followed by Excel at 11% and the Microsoft 365 Admin Center at 6%.

• North America Impacted: Microsoft said the outage affected customers accessing Microsoft 365 through certain network paths in North America. While the company reported partial recovery after rerouting traffic, many users continued to experience service disruptions as mitigation efforts continued.

• Recovery Efforts: Microsoft initially rerouted traffic across affected infrastructure after identifying issues along certain North American network paths. After those efforts produced only partial recovery, the company said it had likely identified the cause of the outage and began testing additional mitigation while monitoring service recovery.

• Business Continuity: During the outage, Microsoft advised customers to review their business continuity and disaster recovery plans while restoration efforts continued. The recommendation came before the company announced it had likely identified the cause of the issue.
