According to a recent report by cybersecurity firm Meta, over 1,000 domains are currently spreading malware that uses the ChatGPT-themed brand. This malware is designed to steal personal information and credentials from unsuspecting victims.

Why it matters: The report highlights the increasing trend of cybercriminals using the branding of popular chatbots and virtual assistants to carry out their attacks. The attackers are switching between themes like Bard and other generative AI platforms as they are detected.

  • The ChatGPT malware is primarily being spread through phishing emails, which contain links to fake login pages designed to steal user credentials.
  • While many of the domains hosting the ChatGPT malware are being taken down quickly, new ones are constantly being created, indicating that the threat is likely to persist for some time.
  • Meta is releasing a suite of tools to help users protect their data, the first of which has been released on Wednesday.
