Lifesaver or job killer? Why AI tools like ChatGPT are so polarizing.

Proponents and naysayers alike agree that generative AI is revolutionary.

Although artificial intelligence and chatbots are nothing new, advanced AI tools like ChatGPT are smarter and more human-sounding than tools that came before. Already, tech companies are racing to incorporate generative AI into their products without weighing the benefits over the risks.

Why it matters: Proponents of generative AI say that its timesaving benefits, ability to conduct lifesaving research, and break down language barriers outweigh any potential risks. Opponents of generative AI tools say that the risks outweigh the undeniable benefits of tools like ChatGPT or DALL-E 2.

  • Despite their sophistication, generative AI tools can still give incorrect or misleading information and perpetuate spam. Bing’s chatbot made news for its hostile comments toward a New York Times reporter.
  • Ultimately, it comes down to how AI is used since most AI tools have the knowledge to do good or bad, depending on what is asked.
  • Sectors from education to healthcare are untouched by generative AI as employers and employees learn to adapt to AI in the workplace.
