Instant Videos Could Represent the Next Leap in A.I. Technology

Generative AI is moving into videos and making incredible advancements at a rapid pace.

Runway, among other companies, is building an innovative artificial intelligence technology that will allow users to create videos through the simple action of typing several words into a box. By typing something like “a peaceful river in the forest,” the AI will generate a unique video portraying that and more.

Why it matters: This is the next big stage in the technology industry’s race to build new AI systems which could be as groundbreaking as web browsers or mobile phones. These generative A.I. systems could speed up the work of filmmakers and other digital artists and make a major impact on creative engineers in every industry.

  • Runway’s CEO Cristóbal Valenzuela believes “This is one of the single most impressive technologies we have built in the last hundred years,” and wants people to test it out instead of keeping it concealed in a lab.
  • The videos are only four seconds long and a bit blurry, but the technology is quickly improving.
  • Other generative A.I. platforms including OpenAI have released similar technology that can create still images which are improving in accuracy and quality, showing that video technology is not far behind.
