New York-based venture capital and private equity firm Insight Partners has confirmed that its information systems were compromised in a cyberattack discovered on January 16, 2025.

The breach, which the company describes as the result of a “sophisticated social engineering attack,” led to unauthorized access to certain systems. Insight Partners, which manages over $90 billion in regulatory assets and has invested in more than 800 technology and software companies, took immediate action upon detecting the breach.

As soon as this incident was detected, we moved quickly to contain, remediate, and start an investigation within a matter of hours,” the firm said in a public statement.

Law enforcement was notified, and the company brought in third-party cybersecurity experts, forensic analysts, and legal counsel to assess the scope and impact of the breach. While Insight Partners has not disclosed whether any sensitive data was accessed or stolen, it has assured stakeholders that operations remain unaffected.

The investigation is expected to take several weeks, and the firm has pledged to provide updates as new information emerges.

Why It Matters: This breach highlights the growing threat of social engineering attacks, which continue to be one of the most effective tools used by cybercriminals to gain unauthorized access to corporate systems. With Insight Partners managing investments in major cybersecurity firms, including Armis, SentinelOne, and Wiz, the attack raises questions about the security challenges even highly sophisticated firms face.

  • Breach Discovery & Response: Insight Partners detected unauthorized access on January 16, 2025, and took immediate action to contain the threat, notifying law enforcement and launching an internal investigation.
  • Social Engineering Attack: The company confirmed that attackers exploited social engineering tactics to gain access, but has not disclosed specific details about how this occurred.
  • No Operational Disruptions: Despite the breach, Insight Partners stated there have been no further disruptions to its operations or continued unauthorized access.
  • Investigation Underway: Third-party cybersecurity experts and legal counsel are conducting a full assessment, which is expected to take several weeks. Insight Partners informed relevant stakeholders in January, urging increased awareness and tightened security protocols.
