Google has agreed to pay $10 million for part of Spirit Airlines’ business data as the carrier sells its remaining assets in bankruptcy. The purchase covers years of internal communications and company records, including information tied to its customers and employees.
Identifying details will be removed before Google receives the data, which could be used to improve its products and AI models.
Mercor submitted the second-highest bid at $7.5 million, showing there was other interest in Spirit’s data.
The sale still needs approval from U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane.
Spirit stopped operating in May, so its assets are being sold separately instead of passing to another airline through an acquisition. That has opened the door for its internal data to be sold directly to an AI company.
Why It Matters: Spirit’s bankruptcy shows that internal company data can retain value after a business shuts down. Google’s $10 million offer puts a price on corporate records for AI use, adding another consideration to decisions about what information is kept and how it can eventually be used.
- What Makes the Data Useful: Spirit’s records capture years of work inside an operating airline. Internal conversations sit alongside records of what was happening across the business, providing context around how decisions were made and work was carried out.
- Data Can Be Sold on Its Own: In a typical airline acquisition, Spirit would normally have been acquired by another airline, with its data transferring as part of the business. Because the carrier shut down and its assets are being sold separately, the records have become an asset of their own. The $10 million agreement and Mercor’s $7.5 million bid offer a rare public example of that data receiving a standalone valuation.
- Anonymization Does Not End the Review: Personal information will be removed before the transfer. Internal records can still contain confidential business material after identifying details are stripped out, while agreements governing the original information may continue to apply.
- Retention Has a New Variable: Historical records are usually kept according to their business value and the risks associated with holding them. The possibility of later AI use can change that calculation by giving some information a purpose that was not anticipated when it was created. At the same time, possible future value does not remove the costs or exposure associated with keeping data longer.
- This Is Different From Earlier Data Deals: Google pays Reddit about $60 million a year for access to its content, while OpenAI has a separate Reddit agreement. The Wikimedia Foundation has also announced agreements with major technology companies. Those deals involve large collections of published or user-generated material. Spirit brings internal corporate information into the mix, with years of business activity becoming the dataset itself.
