Google and Meta Join Forces in Six-Year Cloud Deal to Fuel AI Growth

Did we just become best friends?
TNCR Staff

Meta Platforms has agreed to a six-year deal worth more than $10 billion with Google Cloud. This long-term partnership focuses primarily on artificial intelligence infrastructure, positioning Google as a more serious challenger to Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure in the race to power AI workloads.

The deal diversifies Meta from its traditional cloud providers in a calculated effort to support its aggressive AI roadmap.

Sources familiar with the agreement note that Meta will rely heavily on Google Cloud to help scale its expanding suite of AI services, including its open-source Llama language models and various generative AI applications across its platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

As the demand for AI computing continues to explode, hyperscale cloud providers are fighting to secure lucrative, long-term partnerships with tech giants racing to roll out next-generation AI experiences.

Why It Matters: AI is reshaping vendor alliances. As use cases increasingly dominate infrastructure planning, cloud providers with robust AI offerings and enough capacity to deliver stand to win major business.

  • Google Cloud Lands Meta’s AI Business in $10B+ Deal: Meta has committed over $10 billion to Google Cloud for AI infrastructure over the next six years. While exact contract details remain confidential, the deal marks one of Google Cloud’s largest known commercial wins and a critical milestone in its effort to compete with AWS and Microsoft Azure.
  • AI Is Driving Cloud Deal-Making: Meta’s partnership with Google is centered on scaling AI infrastructure, especially for its Llama model family and related tools. Similar continued industry investment positions AI development as a major driver of extensive hardware and infrastructure investments as companies race to train and deploy large models.
  • Google’s Growing AI Cloud Footprint: Earlier in 2025, Google also secured a cloud deal with OpenAI, which had been tightly integrated with Microsoft Azure. These recent wins are indicative that Google Cloud is becoming a preferred partner for AI-focused enterprises, thanks to its custom-built AI chips (TPUs), large-scale infrastructure, and increasingly competitive pricing.
  • Meta’s Multi-Cloud Strategy Comes into Focus: While Meta operates its own data centers, this deal indicates a growing appetite for a multi-cloud strategy. With AI workloads becoming complex and computing-intensive, relying on a single cloud provider can create bottlenecks or vendor lock-in, something Meta appears keen to avoid.
  • Cloud Market Becomes AI Battleground: Google Cloud’s revenue jumped 32% year-over-year in Q2 to $13.6 billion, well ahead of Alphabet’s overall growth. That momentum, bolstered by big-ticket clients like Meta and OpenAI, suggests that Google’s AI-first cloud strategy is starting to pay off. With generative AI models requiring high-throughput networks and mass storage, cloud providers are racing to become the go-to infrastructure for AI deployment.
