A new AI system is being launched by the Trump administration to help streamline federal regulations. Developed under the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the tool, known as the “DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool,” aims to analyze approximately 200,000 existing federal regulations and recommend the removal of up to half.

Internal documents obtained by The Washington Post show that the initiative is designed to reduce redundancies and cut compliance costs.

The project reflects the administration’s larger deregulatory goals.

As outlined in a recent executive order, federal agencies are now required to repeal ten regulations for every new one introduced.

The AI tool has already been tested at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, with plans to expand to other agencies in the coming months.

Why It Matters: This deployment firmly positions artificial intelligence at the core of federal regulatory management. AI is now a primary instrument in identifying inefficiencies and modernizing government operations. The initiative sets a precedent for how intricate administrative systems can be audited and refined using data-driven tools.

  • AI Tool Designed for Efficiency and Scale: The DOGE AI Deregulation Decision Tool is built to evaluate 200,000 federal regulations and identify which are not required by law. It reduces the review workload by an estimated 93%, turning what would be millions of manual staff hours into an automated, structured process. The tool cross-references rules with statutes, flags redundancies, and drafts proposed eliminations for human review, accelerating a process that traditionally takes months per agency.
  • Early Deployment Shows Operational Momentum: At HUD and the CFPB, the AI system has already reviewed over 1,000 regulations and drafted full repeal proposals. Staff are involved in confirming, modifying, or rejecting the AI’s suggestions, creating a feedback loop that blends speed with agency expertise. These pilots show that the tool is capable of scaling across departments while maintaining procedural integrity.
  • Legally Vetted and Aligned With Administrative Law: The AI tool has been reviewed and endorsed by DOGE’s legal team to ensure compliance with the Administrative Procedure Act. It is not designed to override legal frameworks but to support them by generating rule proposals that still go through standard notice-and-comment procedures.
  • Coordinated Rollout With Defined Deadlines: Every federal agency is scheduled to complete AI-assisted regulatory reviews by September 1, 2025, with formal repeal proposals submitted by January 20, 2026. DOGE is overseeing implementation across departments, providing training and setting benchmarks to ensure consistent use of the tool and alignment with the administration’s deregulation goals.
  • Projected Savings and Broader Impacts: DOGE estimates that repealing 100,000 unnecessary regulations could reduce compliance costs by up to $3.3 trillion annually. In addition to economic benefits, the AI tool is expected to streamline internal workflows, cut government overhead, and improve clarity in the regulatory code.
