Federal AI Standards Director Resigns Three Months After Appointment

Leadership at the Center for AI Standards and Innovation (CAISI) is changing after Director Chris Fall resigned three months after taking the role. The Commerce Department confirmed the departure and named National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Director Dr. Arvind Raman as acting CAISI director while a permanent successor is selected.

Federal AI oversight is also entering an important implementation phase. Agencies are developing evaluation frameworks for advanced AI systems, introducing new cybersecurity initiatives, and working with AI developers on model assessments.

Although Commerce has not publicly stated why Fall resigned, the department said a permanent director is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
