The Department of Justice announced they dismantled Hive, an international ransomware network responsible for extorting and attempting to extort hundreds of millions of dollars from victims in the United States and around the world. The ransomware gang targeted hospitals, school districts, financial firms and other entities by infiltrating and disabling their websites and stealing their data.

Why it matters: The steps taken by the DOJ resulted in one of the most complex and targeted strikes from U.S. law enforcement against a ransomware gang.

  • Cybercrime is an evolving threat in today’s increasingly digital world, but decisive action by law enforcement agencies is helping to mitigate threats.
  • The DOJ’s efforts saved victims over a hundred million dollars in ransom payments and possibly even more in remediation costs.
