Anthropic announced it will offer its Claude AI models to all three branches of the U.S. government for $1 per agency for one year. This announcement follows a similar move by OpenAI, which recently made ChatGPT Enterprise available to executive branch agencies at the same price.
The offer includes Claude for Enterprise and Claude for Government, with the latter designed to support agencies that require strict security and compliance standards for handling sensitive but unclassified data. They are working with the General Services Administration to make the tools easily accessible through existing federal procurement pathways.
Going further than OpenAI, Anthropic’s offer expands the eligible user base, includes support for multicloud deployment, and incorporates hands-on technical assistance.
Claude is already in use across several high-impact government projects, and this rollout aims to deepen that integration.
Why It Matters: By making Claude available to all federal branches and supporting it with secure, dependable infrastructure, Anthropic is preparing it to play a lasting role in government operations. The $1 pricing reflects a strategy focused on influence and integration rather than revenue. The company is signaling that it is prepared to support the federal government as an embedded technology partner.
- Access Across All Three Federal Branches: Anthropic’s offer includes legislative and judicial agencies in addition to executive departments. This allows a wider range of government users, including congressional offices and federal courts, to adopt Claude for document review, research, policy development, and constituent services. Most previous federal AI offers have been limited to executive agencies, making this a notable expansion in scope.
- FedRAMP High Certification for Secure Use: Claude for Government meets FedRAMP High requirements, the most rigorous certification for handling sensitive but unclassified federal data. This enables agencies to use Claude for tasks involving legal analysis and internal communications that require strong security. The offer also supports multicloud access through AWS, Google Cloud, and Palantir, which gives agencies flexibility in choosing infrastructure aligned with their existing systems.
- Real-World Deployments in High-Impact Agencies: Claude is already being used by 10,000 researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to support scientific work. It is also active in the D.C. Department of Health, where it assists residents in multiple languages. In the national security sphere, the Department of Defense selected Claude as part of a $200 million AI initiative for critical missions.
- Deployment Support Included in the Offer: The $1 program includes technical assistance from Anthropic to help agencies implement and integrate Claude into their existing workflows. Support includes onboarding and configuration to ensure that federal users can deploy Claude effectively and securely. This is especially useful for agencies without dedicated AI engineering teams, allowing them to make full use of the tool with less operational friction.
- Robust Oversight and Safety Controls: Anthropic’s Safeguards team has built a policy and enforcement framework around Claude that includes usage guidelines and real-time monitoring for harmful or inappropriate content. The system uses classifiers to detect violations and adjust responses in real time. These tools are part of what makes Claude suitable for government settings, where oversight and reliability are essential.
