AI Policy Group Wants the FTC to Investigate OpenAI and Block GPT Over ‘Deceptive’ Behavior

CAIDP claims that the popular AI tool has too many risks in its current form.

An AI think tank wants the FTC to investigate OpenAI for possible consumer protection violations. The Center for AI and Digital Policy has filed a complaint with the FTC, claiming that the risks of GPT are not yet fully understood. If the FTC chooses to investigate, it could be an early test of the appetite of the US government to regulate AI.

Why it matters: CAIDP believes that unregulated AI could pose huge risks as GPT in particular still generates unreliable answers. OpenAI has acknowledged that ChatGPT has errors, and its release of GPT-4 came with a disclaimer about the AI’s limitations.

  • An FTC investigation would require AI companies down the road to build deterrence against misinformation in the models themselves.
  • Because of AI’s impact on cybersecurity and consumer privacy, CAIDP states that an investigation of AI’s inner workings is squarely within the FTC’s jurisdiction.
  • CAIDP released an open letter last week that thousands of people, including Elon Musk, signed, warning against the dangers of unchecked AI advancement.
