A new AI Essentials course has been launched through a partnership between the state of Oklahoma and Google, aiming to equip residents with the skills needed to utilize artificial intelligence (AI). Announced on May 30, this initiative is part of Governor Kevin Stitt’s broader strategy to position Oklahoma as a national leader in AI. The course is designed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of AI, focusing on responsible and ethical usage.

The AI Essentials course is open to 10,000 Oklahomans at a time, offering hands-on experience that can be applied across various industries. The program is free and accessible to all residents, regardless of their educational background or prior AI experience. This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to addressing the AI skills gap and preparing its workforce for the future.

Why it matters: As AI transforms work processes, the demand for skilled professionals rises. Oklahoma’s AI Essentials course aims to bridge workforce gaps and equip residents with necessary skills, enhancing individual careers and supporting the state’s economic development.

  • Impact and Reach: The course can accommodate 10,000 participants at a time, with metrics being tracked to measure completion rates and participant demographics. Nearly 2,000 individuals signed up within the first week, indicating strong interest and the potential for significant impact.
  • Workforce Development Goals: The course aims to serve various workforce needs, from upskilling individuals to helping those re-enter the job market. The initiative aligns with the state’s goal of equipping workers with the skills necessary for future success, as highlighted by a World Economic Forum estimate that 50% of employees will need reskilling by 2025.
  • Additional Initiatives: Beyond the AI Essentials course, Oklahoma is working on other AI-related projects, including Google’s Generative AI for Educators course, which will be offered in several public school districts.
