CIO Insight: What to Consider in an Enterprise Device Manufacturer

Cost, reliability, security - which manufacturer fits your needs?

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) plays a crucial role in selecting the right device manufacturer to provide a high-quality user experience and enhance productivity. Choosing the right manufacturer for these devices is crucial to achieving this goal. While the Mac vs. PC debate is often the center of the discussion, the decision becomes even more complex when considering all the different PC manufacturers available.

CIO Professional Network members recently shared what device manufacturer they use for their organization.

Mac vs. PC

Dell is the most popular manufacturer, with a usage percentage of 52.6%, followed by Lenovo at 19.3%. With 8.8% usage, Microsoft stands third in line, while 7.0% of the respondents do not have a standard device manufacturer. Surprisingly, Apple, often considered a popular choice for businesses, has only 5.3% usage among the survey respondents. HP and Acer have a usage percentage of 3.5% and 1.8%, respectively. Google also has 1.8% usage among the survey respondents.

Dell computers ranked at the top of the pack with over half of CIO Professional Network members reporting their enterprise uses Dell. It is not a surprising result, since Dell’s product line ranges from budget devices to high-end machines, allowing CIOs to choose based on the needs of the organization or the users. Dell’s Pro Support, a service that offers fast and effective technical issue resolution, also contributes to its popularity.

With its sturdy and reliable devices, Lenovo is another popular choice for enterprise customers. The ThinkPad line’s excellent keyboard and trackpad make it a popular option for customers, and its comparatively low price is appealing to organizations who need decent devices while keeping costs under control.

Microsoft, known for its Surface devices, has gained popularity due to its innovative designs and features. The Surface line is sleek and modern and popular among creative professionals. However, Microsoft’s limited product line and high prices may not be suitable for every business.

Organizations without a standard may allow employees to choose between a few options or implement a bring-your-own-device program that allows employees to use devices they may feel more comfortable with. Studies show that employees who use devices that they feel more productive with result in more satisfaction with technology at work.

Every organization is different

The choice of device manufacturer boils down to the needs of the organization. A larger organization may prefer Dell or Lenovo because of its reliability and affordability, but an organization with a large number of employees doing creative work may prefer Apple because of its powerful hardware and intuitive software. CIOs should take the needs of the organizations and employees when choosing a manufacturer to get the most out of the devices.
