Best Buy (NYSE:BBY) reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $13.8 billion, with an adjusted operating margin of 5% and adjusted earnings per share of $2.61. All three metrics were slightly higher than the prior year.

Comparable sales declined 0.8% during the quarter as a result of uneven consumer demand across the holiday period. Softer sales in November and early December improved late in the quarter, with strong activity during the final weeks of December and the start of January.

Computing and mobile phones continued to post growth, while emerging product categories such as AI glasses, 3D printers, health rings, collectibles, and handheld gaming devices gained traction with customers.

Technology played a prominent role throughout the company’s strategy discussion as leadership discussed investments in digital infrastructure and improvements to customer support capabilities.

Best Buy also detailed partnerships with major technology platforms to integrate its product catalog into AI-powered discovery and purchasing environments. These initiatives, combined with ongoing investments in Marketplace and retail media capabilities, form a large part of the retailer’s technology roadmap as it prepares for new digital shopping behaviors.

Why It Matters: Retail technology platforms are entering a period where AI systems may influence how products are discovered and purchased online. Best Buy’s leadership described work underway to ensure the company’s digital systems are accessible to these emerging environments while maintaining strong fulfillment performance and service capabilities. Platforms must adapt as search and purchasing workflows start occurring more often through AI interfaces. Investments in catalog integration and operational infrastructure will play a major role in enabling those experiences.

  • AI Shopping Enters the Chat Interface: Best Buy is building integrations that allow AI systems to surface and transact on its product catalog within conversational interfaces and AI search environments. Leadership described a partnership with OpenAI that allows customers to explore and discover products through ChatGPT, creating a pathway for AI systems to surface Best Buy inventory during the discovery stage of a purchase journey. The company said it is among the early retailers enabling its catalog to appear in these experiences, allowing shoppers to browse product offerings through conversational tools. Executives also said the retailer is exploring additional opportunities tied to OpenAI advertising programs and shopping integrations.
  • Marketplace Expansion Extends Store Inventory Digitally: Best Buy reported that its U.S. marketplace generated roughly $300 million in gross merchandise value during the fourth quarter as third-party sellers expanded the assortment available through the retailer’s online platform. The marketplace currently includes more than 1,100 sellers, and leadership said more than 90% of storefront partners generate sales in any given week. Store employees now have tools that allow them to help customers order items through the marketplace even when those products are not physically stocked in the store. Management also noted that customer satisfaction scores for marketplace purchases remain consistent with first-party transactions and that return rates for these products remain lower than traditional retail inventory.
  • AI Search Becomes a Checkout Channel: Best Buy said it is supporting Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol, a cross-industry standard designed to enable agent-based purchasing across the web. Through this initiative the retailer is working with Google on a system that allows customers to purchase products directly in AI mode within Google Search and inside the Gemini application. Management said these capabilities will allow AI systems to surface Best Buy products and guide customers through the purchase process without requiring traditional site navigation. The company also noted that its digital infrastructure is being prepared so automated agents can browse the product catalog and interact with its systems during the shopping process.
  • Faster Fulfillment Through Retail Tech Systems: During the fourth quarter Best Buy reached its fastest fulfillment speeds ever recorded during a holiday quarter, with 70% of online purchases completed within two days. Leadership attributed these improvements to technology investments that strengthen logistics coordination, inventory availability, and customer support systems tied to online orders. The company said these improvements support higher satisfaction scores across several customer experience categories, including product availability and store readiness for pickup orders. Management described these tools as part of a larger effort to use technology to improve operational efficiency while improving service for digital shoppers.
  • Enterprise Tech Services Drive Best Buy Business Growth: The company said its Best Buy Business division focuses on organizations across education, hospitality, healthcare, builders, and corporate enterprise environments. These engagements often combine product sales with services such as field installation, device configuration, and lifecycle management support delivered over the life of enterprise hardware deployments. Leadership said the segment generated more than $1.1 billion in revenue during fiscal 2026 and expects mid-single-digit growth during fiscal 2027. The company described this unit as an extension of its services organization, using its technical workforce and service infrastructure to support enterprise technology environments that require installation, maintenance, and long-term support.
