Automatic Data Processing (NASDAQ: ADP) reported a strong start to fiscal 2027, with first-quarter revenue increasing 6% and adjusted earnings per share rising 13%. Adjusted EBIT margin expanded 130 basis points, supported in part by improvements in operating productivity.

Following the quarter’s performance, ADP raised its full-year revenue and earnings outlook, forecasting approximately 6% revenue growth and adjusted EPS growth of 10%–12%.

AI adoption featured prominently in the earnings discussion, with executives detailing progress in workforce automation and enterprise connectivity. ADP Assist reached another 100,000 clients, while new Model Context Protocol (MCP) capabilities within API Central enabled governed connections between AI agents and workforce data.

The company’s technology investments also included continued deployment of its AI-enabled service platform, The Zone, alongside cloud infrastructure and global payroll development.

Executives discussed opportunities to integrate ADP services into third-party platforms, extending access to workforce technology through existing business applications.

Why It Matters: ADP’s expansion of AI agents introduces new considerations for securing sensitive workforce data across connected enterprise systems. Its approach to governed AI integration demonstrates how organizations can strengthen oversight while using automation to improve operational efficiency and support continued technology investment.

  • AI Agents Deliver Measurable Gains in Recruiting and HR: The company now has approximately 50 AI agents generally available, including tools for recruiting and natural-language reporting. Its Recruiting AI Interviewer Agent has completed more than 4,400 interviews since early September, reducing interview-related time by 75%. More than half of those interviews occurred after hours. CEO Maria Black described the company’s approach, stating, “We are building AI that makes those consequential moments better, not AI that treats them as problems to eliminate.“
  • MCP Expands AI Connectivity Across Workforce Systems: The company expanded API Central to support Model Context Protocol, allowing AI agents to connect with workforce data through governed integrations. CEO Maria Black said the offering includes authorization controls to manage system access and protect sensitive information. The development extends ADP’s existing integration capabilities, which include a Marketplace with more than 500 applications. Management confirmed that API Central currently operates under a consumption-based pricing model.
  • AI Automation Reduces Service Workloads and Operating Costs: ADP deployed The Zone to 60% of its service workforce, up from 48% at the end of fiscal 2026. In its downmarket HR and payroll business, contacts handled per client declined 7% year over year, following an 8% reduction during the previous fiscal year. CFO Peter Hadley attributed the reductions to the combined use of The Zone and ADP Assist. The company also expects to complete deployment of its AI-enabled sales platform across North American sellers by the end of fiscal 2027.
  • Lyric HCM Expands Global Payroll and Workforce Integration: The company extended Lyric HCM availability to businesses headquartered in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, incorporating local payroll and regulatory requirements into the platform. ADP also confirmed that its WorkForce Suite is fully integrated across its platforms, including Workforce Now. Black said the integration supports the company’s time and labor management offerings across its business segments. In a separate customer implementation, Lyric HCM helped an education management company reduce its time to fill positions by 35% through changes to recruiting workflows.
  • Embedded Payroll and Cloud Investments Extend ADP’s Reach: The company partnered with PNC Bank to offer payroll and HR capabilities through the bank’s digital banking platform. The offering will allow small businesses to access ADP services directly within their banking environment, extending the company’s embedded-services approach. Management also confirmed continued investments in cloud infrastructure and AI development alongside product modernization. Hadley said productivity improvements are helping fund those investments while ADP maintains its fiscal 2027 adjusted EBIT margin expansion outlook of 70–90 basis points.
