How AI Is Changing the CIO Mindset

Only 25% of more than 100 CHROs and talent and learning leaders surveyed said they were confident their organizations’ leaders could effectively lead in an AI-driven world.

The research found that the way they respond to uncertainty, challenge their own assumptions and work through the human side of change could have just as much bearing on how well organizations adapt.

That led researchers to three areas of focus, moving from certainty to clarity, expertise to exploration and emotional control to emotional insight.

Why It Matters: AI is testing assumptions that have shaped technology decisions for years. A successful pilot may not predict production costs, established controls may not account for autonomous systems and previous experience may offer less guidance when capabilities change quickly. The challenge is recognizing which lessons still hold and which assumptions need another look before they become part of how the organization operates.

  • Clarity Can Matter More Than Certainty: There is a difference between having all the answers and knowing which ones are needed to move forward. An AI initiative may still have open questions around cost, governance or future capabilities while providing enough information to make decisions about what is ready now. The idea is to keep unresolved questions from competing with the ones that actually need an answer.
  • Experience Does Not Have to Set the Direction: What worked before can be a useful starting point without becoming the automatic answer. AI is changing some of the conditions that previous technology decisions were built around, from how software gets developed to how work is divided across teams. Leaving room to explore can help determine whether an established approach still makes sense as those conditions change.
  • It May Be Worth Asking a Different Question: Choosing a model, estimating costs and setting a deployment timeline may only cover part of an AI initiative. A pilot that works well with a small group can look different once hundreds of employees are using it, connecting it to other systems or finding uses that were never part of the original plan. Asking what could change once the technology moves into everyday use can bring different considerations into the decision.
  • Employee Reactions Can Add Context: Questions or resistance around AI may reveal something about how the technology is affecting the work itself. Only 12% of leaders rated themselves as highly skilled at navigating emotions, while 10% of employees said the same about their leaders. Concerns around a rollout can point to unclear ownership, changing responsibilities or differences between how a tool was intended to be used and how employees actually use it.
  • Notice the Default Response: When decisions need to be made quickly, it is easy to fall back on what has worked before. Taking a closer look at that first instinct can help determine what is driving the decision. The familiar approach may still be the right one, but changing circumstances can make it worth reconsidering before moving ahead.
