Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has joined the growing debate over whether AI companies should slow the development of more capable models, arguing that safety does not necessarily require putting the brakes on progress.
Zuckerberg said AI companies already have strong incentives to make their systems safer because failures can create liability, damage trust and make their products less competitive.
He pointed to Meta’s decision to delay its Muse AI technology over safety and security concerns as an example of companies holding products back without outside intervention.
His position puts Meta closer to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who has argued that AI safety should be treated primarily as an engineering and testing responsibility. Their comments push back on Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s proposal to slow frontier model development, while Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman has raised separate concerns about how advanced models are being trained.

Anthropic says those human concepts can help Claude reason about values and behavior, while acknowledging that its approach may change as understanding improves.
