Rob Witoff has been appointed Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Coinbase, taking responsibility for the company’s technology strategy and engineering organization after returning to the cryptocurrency exchange in late 2024.

As CTO, Witoff will lead Coinbase’s engineering efforts with a focus on scaling the platform for developers as artificial intelligence increasingly transforms software development. In announcing his appointment, he said his goal is to make Coinbase “the world’s best platform for builders,” while building on the company’s engineering culture and pace of innovation.

Witoff is one of Coinbase’s earliest engineering leaders, having joined the company in 2014 as its first infrastructure engineer. During his initial tenure, he served as Director of Infrastructure & Security before becoming Chief Architect, helping define Coinbase’s original technical vision alongside its founders and leading the development of its cloud infrastructure, security, and engineering capabilities.

After leaving Coinbase in 2017, Witoff joined Google, where he worked in Detection & Response Engineering. He later co-founded institutional cold storage and staking company Unit 410, serving as CEO from 2018 until Coinbase acquired the business. Witoff returned to Coinbase in November 2024 as Head of Platform, joining the company’s executive team before being named CTO.
