Uber has appointed Philip Martin as Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), bringing in an experienced cybersecurity leader with a background spanning technology, financial services, and the military.

Martin joins Uber after more than a decade at Coinbase, where he served as Chief Security Officer since 2016. In that role, he led a global team of more than 250 professionals responsible for cybersecurity, trust and safety, physical security, technology governance, risk and compliance, and business resilience across the company’s consumer and enterprise operations.

Before Coinbase, Martin established and led the Incident Response and Security Engineering teams at Palantir Technologies and previously worked on virtual infrastructure at Amazon’s A9.

Earlier in his career, he spent 10 years in the U.S. Army as a counterintelligence agent and Arabic linguist, serving in tactical and strategic roles in the United States and overseas.

In a LinkedIn post announcing his appointment, Martin said Uber’s mission and real-world impact made the opportunity especially compelling, noting that security at the company helps protect not only data but also the safety of riders, drivers, couriers, and trips around the world.
