AWS and OpenAI have expanded their partnership to make OpenAI’s latest AI capabilities directly available within Amazon Bedrock. The update introduces access to current OpenAI models, the Codex coding agent, and Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents powered by OpenAI.

These offerings are in limited preview and run within AWS infrastructure already used for production systems, allowing organizations to adopt new AI capabilities without changing where their workloads operate.

Amazon Bedrock provides a single service for working with multiple AI models, and OpenAI models are now part of that environment. Teams can access them through the same APIs used for model selection and orchestration, while keeping existing governance controls in place. This also allows OpenAI models to be evaluated alongside alternatives from providers such as Anthropic, Meta, Mistral, Cohere, and Amazon.

Ed Anderson, a Gartner Distinguished VP Analyst covering cloud and AI infrastructure, described the move as “significant for AWS customers, who now have access to the latest OpenAI models through Amazon Bedrock.

Why It Matters: As OpenAI agents become available across more cloud platforms, organizations gain more flexibility in how they design AI strategies across cloud and model providers. As Anderson explained, “Customers can expand their AI strategies to leverage the strengths of multi-cloud environments and select the best models for each use case.”

  • OpenAI Models Available Through Amazon Bedrock APIs: The latest OpenAI models, including GPT-5.5, are now accessible through Amazon Bedrock, with support for model access and orchestration through existing APIs. These models inherit AWS security and governance features, and there is no separate infrastructure to configure. Usage can be applied toward existing AWS commitments, helping simplify procurement and cost management.
  • Codex Integrated Into AWS Development Workflows: Codex is now available on Bedrock and can be used within familiar tools such as the CLI, desktop app, and Visual Studio Code extension. It supports work across the development lifecycle, from generating code to helping teams understand and update existing systems. It can also assist with research and document-based tasks when connected to enterprise tools.
  • Managed Agents Support Production AI Systems: Amazon Bedrock Managed Agents, powered by OpenAI, provide a way to deploy AI systems that can carry out multi-step work over time. These agents maintain context, operate within defined permissions, and interact with tools as needed. They run within AWS environments, with model inference handled through Bedrock and execution guided by OpenAI’s agent framework.
  • Security and Compliance Remain Within AWS Systems: All capabilities operate within AWS security and governance frameworks. This includes identity controls, encryption, and audit logging that provide visibility into how systems are used. AI workloads remain aligned with existing compliance processes and billing structures.
  • AgentCore Extends Deployment and Management Capabilities: Bedrock Managed Agents connect with Bedrock AgentCore, which provides the underlying runtime along with oversight capabilities. This supports deploying large numbers of agents that can interact with enterprise data and applications, while maintaining control as usage expands.
