Texas has appointed Tony Sauerhoff as state CIO and executive director of the Department of Information Resources (DIR), formalizing his leadership after serving in the role on an interim basis since January.

Sauerhoff most recently served as DIR’s Chief AI and Innovation Officer, where he led statewide AI initiatives. He previously held roles as Texas Chief Information Security Officer and Chair of the Texas Cybersecurity Council, bringing deep experience in cybersecurity and emerging technologies.
He also brings federal and military experience from the U.S. Courts, Marine Corps Reserve and U.S. Air Force.
As state CIO, Sauerhoff will lead Texas’ technology strategy, overseeing modernization, cybersecurity coordination and the adoption of AI across state government.
