New York State has named Eleonore Fournier-Tombs as its new Chief Artificial Intelligence Officer, succeeding Shreya Amin less than a year after her appointment.

Fournier-Tombs brings over 15 years of experience in AI, data governance, and digital transformation. She most recently served as Head of Anticipatory Action and Innovation and as a senior researcher at United Nations University, where she founded and led the UN’s first AI policy research lab.
In her new role, she will lead the next phase of the state’s AI strategy, working across the Office of Information Technology Services (ITS) and state agencies to drive ethical and effective adoption of AI. Her priorities include refining New York’s acceptable use of AI policy, expanding AI education for state employees, and deploying generative AI tools to improve public service delivery.
“It is truly a privilege and an honor to serve the State of New York as Chief AI Officer,” Fournier-Tombs said in a statement.
State CIO Dru Rai praised the appointment, calling Fournier-Tombs’ leadership essential to advancing innovation and ensuring responsible AI implementation across government.
