Walmart is working with Google to bring its product selection into the Gemini AI assistant. The partnership allows shoppers to interact with Gemini to find and buy items from Walmart and Sam’s Club. Instead of navigating websites or apps, users can now rely on natural language conversations to receive recommendations and complete purchases.
This integration will commence in the United States before expanding to other regions.
Announced at the National Retail Federation’s Big Show, the initiative is built using Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol. By linking their Walmart accounts, users will gain access to personalized suggestions based on their purchase history, membership benefits, and active shopping carts.
The collaboration follows Walmart’s recent efforts to adapt its retail experience to how people are beginning to shop through AI-first platforms like ChatGPT and its in-house assistant, Sparky.
Why It Matters: Walmart’s integration with Google’s Gemini shows how retail is beginning to align with AI-driven behaviors, where discovery and decision-making now happen inside conversational platforms. Rather than pulling shoppers into its own ecosystem, Walmart is embedding itself into the digital environments where choices are already being made. This creates commerce that feels less like a transaction and more like part of the flow of everyday questions and routines.
- Product Access in Gemini: Walmart’s inventory, both in-store and online, will now appear within Google Gemini responses. When users ask Gemini for recommendations on products such as camping gear, groceries, or home goods, the assistant will be able to include relevant options from Walmart and Sam’s Club. These suggestions will naturally arise during the conversation, making product discovery more responsive to customer questions.
- Personalized Suggestions: Customers who connect their Walmart accounts will receive tailored recommendations. Gemini will draw from users’ previous purchases to offer items that complement what they already own or frequently buy. It will also allow users to combine new items with existing ones in their Walmart or Sam’s Club shopping carts. Membership perks, such as Walmart+, will carry over to the Gemini experience, maintaining consistency across platforms.
- Flexible Delivery Options: The collaboration includes delivery options that are intended to meet specific customer needs. People using Gemini to shop can select delivery windows that suit their schedules, with some orders arriving within the same day. The service is designed to work across different types of purchases, whether they are everyday essentials or one-time needs.
- Retail Strategy Evolution: Walmart leaders are emphasizing that this project is a larger transformation in how people interact with commerce. Incoming Walmart CEO John Furner described the move as a way to bring shopping closer to real-time decision-making, allowing customers to go from wanting an item to having it in their hands more efficiently.
- Extending the AI Relationship: Gemini’s integration builds on other recent AI developments within Walmart’s digital roadmap. In October, the company began working with OpenAI to launch Instant Checkout through ChatGPT. It also continues to develop its own AI tools, including Sparky, the assistant built into Walmart’s mobile app, to innovate how customers start and complete their purchases.
