Slim CD, a payment-processing company that facilitates electronic transactions, has disclosed a data breach potentially affecting 1.7 million individuals. The breach exposed sensitive customer information, including names, addresses, credit card numbers, and expiration dates.

The Florida-based company revealed the incident in a detailed notification to regulatory authorities, explaining that its investigation found the intruder had access to its systems starting in August 2023. However, the actual data breach didn’t occur until June 14, 2024, and lasted approximately two days, affecting critical system operations.

The company is working with law enforcement and cybersecurity experts to strengthen its defenses and prevent future breaches, as well as notify affected individuals.

Why It Matters: The breach at Slim CD is part of a broader trend of cyberattacks targeting payment systems, contributing to billions in global financial losses as compromised data is often sold on the dark web. Although this cyberattack lasted only two days, attackers had infiltrated the network nearly 10 months earlier, raising concerns about long-term vulnerabilities. With 1.7 million individuals affected, the exposed data carries significant potential for fraud and identity theft.

  • Scale of Breach: The breach affected nearly 1.7 million individuals, with sensitive data such as names, addresses, and credit card information compromised. The company is working with third-party cybersecurity experts and law enforcement to investigate the breach, updating its security protocols to prevent a recurrence.
  • Timing and Discovery: Slim CD first detected suspicious activity on June 15, 2024, though attackers had accessed the network as early as August 2023. The breach lasted just two days but affected a significant number of people.
  • Scope of Data: Compromised data included full names, physical addresses, credit card numbers, and expiration dates, though the absence of CVV numbers lowers the immediate risk of fraudulent transactions.
  • Customer Advisory: Slim CD has notified affected individuals but at this time has not offered complimentary identity theft protection services. It recommends those affected by this data breach to monitor their accounts for fraudulent activity.
