Microsoft’s president calls for dialogue on AI

Brad Smith calls for more eyes on AI as the technology progresses.

Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, said in a blog post on Thursday that AI will need more guardrails than tech companies alone can provide. While the organizations pioneering AI have safeguards in place already, the technology requires a bigger dialogue among stakeholders.

Why it matters: As AI technologies become more advanced, there are few laws that govern the use of AI in businesses and government.

  • Microsoft and other organizations have ethics in place, but Smith argues they aren’t enough.
  • Smith stopped short of calling for the regulation of AI by governments.
