PayPal has announced the appointment of Srini Venkatesan, a top tech executive from Walmart, as its new Chief Technology Officer. Venkatesan will spearhead PayPal’s technology initiatives, encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, information security, and product engineering.
At Walmart, Venkatesan managed a team of 14,000 in the U.S. Omni Platforms and Tech organization, where he was instrumental in developing platforms supporting the retailer, including elements of the Walmart+ subscription service.
Before his tenure at Walmart, Venkatesan held several significant roles at Amazon, including Vice President of Engineering for the company’s e-commerce platform. He was pivotal in scaling Amazon’s technology infrastructure and improving the customer experience through advanced AI and machine learning applications.
This strategic move comes under the leadership of PayPal CEO Alex Chriss, who joined the company in September. Chriss shared, “Srini’s extensive experience in leading technology, digital transformation, and AI personalization from within some of our largest customers and partners will be invaluable as we revolutionize commerce globally.”
